What is Yoga anyway?

What IS this magical, mysterious thing that you love, that has been having an impact on your body, your mind, and perhaps your life... what IS it? There are many, many teachings on and descriptions of yoga encoded in Sanskrit in many ancient texts of the yoga tradition, not to mention all of the modern books, lectures, blogs in so many languages...that seek to define yoga (and all the ones that talk about the teachings of yoga, without even using the "Y" word!). Let's explore one such definition of yoga now...

What Kind of Yogi Are You (for Now)?

I always think of your level as a yogi more in terms of your mental state than your physical prowess... because it's true! If you've ever been around an enlightened being... you know in your soul that the yogic state has NOTHING to do with bending into a pretzel. For an authority on this topic let's look back (waaaay back) to the ancient text Śiva Saṃhitā*. It offers some powerful insight that coincides with what I've noticed over the years. Note that some words in classic texts can be extreme or hyperbolic - this is called arthavāda - and it's actually meant to trigger shock to help us learn and remember a point! The language meant to shine the light of awareness on our inner attitudes, so that we may mature as yogis. We might also keep in mind that not all of us start as beginners (in terms of internal mind set)... or that we may bounce around at different times of life, depending on our internal or external circumstances. A Love Note to My Journey... and yours!

PictureMe... Dorothy... on a QUEST!
I wasn't born with any conscious plans to "be a yogi" (who is?!)... I was voraciously curious about human nature... Starting when I was 10 years old, my family endured some traumas and hardships and that fueled my interest in struggle and survival. I read a LOT of books - about slavery, civil rights, ancient Egypt, indigenous cultures and such. The traumas also fueled my tendency to feel concerned and responsible for the well-being of others. After a volunteer-work trip to central America in my teens, I was set! I was going to "make a difference" by helping those in need - women, children, and families who were suffering. I went to college with a focused spirit and was ultimately invited to a PhD program... to be paid to teach and do research...

.... Except, something was nagging at me...

Architecture of a Yoga Pose

We all can understand that being inside the architecture of a Roman Cathedral has a particular internal effect, different from a log cabin! Or what about overlooking the Taj Mahal? Standing at the roots of a Redwood tree? Sitting fireside in an oceanside cottage? Architecture has an impact. What about the architecture of a yoga pose? What is the difference in effect between reclined, seated or standing poses? You can elevate the subtlety of your yoga practice if you take into consideration the effects of the architecture of the poses.  Vāstu (the vedic science of arrangement, design and architecture) can be applied to the architecture of a home, business or place of worship, interior design, nature, and even the postures of the human body. Let's look at three of the main types of yoga poses - reclined, standing and seated - in terms of this tradition of noting the subtle effect of architecture.

Change your Body, Transform Your Life?!

12/21/2014

A few years ago, two yoga students who were long time friends "BY" (before yoga), came up to me after class and said... "we've noticed something lately... all the stuff we used to have fun doing - like going out with friends and staying out late and drinking alcohol, and even eating certain foods... it isn't really fun anymore! What's going on? Are we depressed?? What changed?"

Guess what... whether you intended it to happen or not... Yoga transforms your LIFE! You may have started yoga for your body, or even for your mind (or because someone dragged you in because they thought it would help something with your body or mind)... and (if you found a legitimate practice and teacher) you got relief pretty quickly... then you got addicted to yoga, and then you started to notice that your life was changing too - oops, did you sign up for that?!   What is really happening, is that your life is getting more aligned with natural cycles, natural tendencies, natural rhythms and natural goals.

Free! Heart-Centered Guide Awareness for You

Check out this recorded guided awareness for your home practice! I'd love to read your comments here or on Facebook please share this gift with your loved ones, your family, your co-workers - we could all use a little more LOVE and RELAXATION!
Picture

"The heart which knows love, deeply relaxes in that love. The heart becomes withered by constant worldly stimulation… and the more withered the heart, the greater the need for worldly amusements, sensations and stimulation. We satisfy craving by pursuing these things and the heart and mind become withered.  It takes time to unwind the mind and settle into love.  Love is not cognized through your mind.  Love is more primordial than your mind; more primordial than thought.  An agitated mind can not know love. A slow or sluggish mind can not know love. A mind full of intellectualization or rationalization can not know love. Love is known by awareness… for this, the mind must be quiet, silent, steady,  focused. Give yourself solitude.  Start in an easy way, a simple way. It will take you a long way." - Swami Tattvavidānanda

Ujjayi - Breath of Victory!

12/3/2014

Breathing practices in the yoga tradition have the purpose of moving or manipulating the flow of prāna (life force) in the respiratory system and throughout the subtle body. Prāna flows through the channels of the subtle body (called meridians or nādis), to bring us into being and keep us alive! The more prāna you have, the more vibrant, energized, stable, confident, happy, light, healthy and joyful you are. If you are depleted in prāna (due to poor diet, imbalanced lifestyle, lack of activity or excessive activity, stress, illness, and so on) - you will feel low, depressed, slow, tired, exhausted, unhappy, fearful, over-sensitive, depleted, cloudy, and unmotivated. Yuck!
