Patanjali Yoga Sūtra Translations
  • Patanjali Yoga Sūtra Translation, by A.K. Aruna. These are the best translations of the Sanskrit. He has a simple Translation which is small, simple and straightforward and 2) - a longer translation plus commentary written in the light of Vedanta philosophy.
  • The Science of Yoga, Taimini (Great for teachers and deeper students who want to engage in learning. This translation is accurate and the commentary is technical, academic, good for advanced teachers and advanced students)
  • Yoga Sūtra of Maharishi Patanjali, Swami Venkatesananda (A great small translation, no commentary, technical and accurate sanskrit translation.  Great to carry around and as an augment to a larger book with commentary)
  • The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Alistair Shearer (Great for students to use as a contemplative read before meditation or for teachers to use for in-class contemplations.  A poetic translation that takes some liberties in the translation that keeps the language inspired, dropping some of the technical language in exchange for the poetic, while retaining the true principles of the text).
  • The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, Swami Satchidananda (This is a lighter, easier read with lots of stories and examples, like sitting & listening to a live teacher, good for students who want an inspired read without getting technical)
