Therapeutic Twists

Restorative, Ayurvedic, Awareness-Based Approach to Twists
Contact Kaya for details
Twists are perhaps, the most valuable (but subtle) category of yoga poses. They open the heart, help resolve emotional patterns, decompress the spine, massage the internal organs and prime the mind for deep meditation.  Twists are the poses in which students of all levels get the easiest and most palpable experience of transformation and bliss, with very little effort. They can turn a new student into a long-committed lover of yoga and an experienced student into baby-like putty.  This rich weekend empowers yoga teachers to work effectively and therapeutically to offer twists at a very high level of expertise in both group and one-on-one contexts.  Learn to teach twists more deeply, more profoundly and more effectively.
  • Gain an approach to twists that enables pure spinal movement.
  • Explore the implications of twists according to ayurveda and vastu (vedic system of design akin to Feng Shui)
  • Take familiar twists to a new level and learn several NEW twists
  • Explore classical sequencing rules that apply to all yoga styles
  • Develop hands on adjustment skills for twists
  • Learn how to keep students safe from over-twisting easily injured areas.
The course includes 2 experiential yoga classes - including an "all levels" class and a deeper class, both with a twists focus, as well as multiple hours of practicum.
February 13, 3pm-6pm - Stress Management Center of Marin

The Hyper-Flexible Yogi

For teachers of any style
You may have students who move very far in poses but are living in pain or with a very busy mind (maybe one of those student is you!) Learn what's going on for them (or you!) and get important  "dos & don'ts" for students with overstretched ligaments including specialized props and alignments. Gain insight into both the anatomical and emotional aspects of hyper-flexibility. When the joints are hyperflexible, the internal core layers are very rigid.  Specialized angles and refined propping is required.  Hyper-flexible students will transform their practice and teachers will learn to work with the many students dealing with slippery joints and tight spines. This course utilizes principles of spinal decompression, classical yoga, relaxation, ayurveda, tri-guna theory and bio-mechanics.

The Power and Practice of Hands-on Yoga Teaching

For teachers of any style
As a yoga teacher it is very important to work hands-on with students, to give them direct insight into where their bodies are in space and how to get the most out of a pose.  However, while a teacher may be comfortable with this, many yoga students are surprised at first, and may even be survivors of physical or sexual abuse.  Learn the value of hands on alignments and adjustments (regardless of your particular yoga style) as well as specific do's and don'ts.  Discover how to be confident, effective, safe and supportive with touch as well as how to let go of attachment for students "get better" or "need" you in the process.  Explore the difference between essential and "touchy-feely".  This class combines lecture, discussion and partner work for direct experiential learning that you can bring to your own students right away!

Fall 2015 Date TBA!

Upgrade Your Restorative Yoga Communication Skills

For Inward-Oriented Yoga teachers (who use restorative and relaxing approaches)
This workshop for teachers focuses on teaching and language tools that effectively communicate the value of release, relaxation and letting go new students - particularly those coming from the pilates, gyrotonic, athletics, or modern extreme yoga paradigms. This is a particularly important skill for teachers in communities or studios where incoming students have previously experienced other approaches to working with the body. In many cases you are interacting with students' attachment to a paradigm that is not benefitting them, OR a preexisting notion about what yoga is that prevents them from being open to something new.
  • Look at the mindset of those coming from those modalities and learn to work with it, rather than against it.
  • Gain understanding of the physical impact of these other paradigms and what poses and adjustments will most effectively give them immediate experience of letting go.
  • Develop great one-liners to use with new or doubtful in the classroom and your marketing materials.
  • Learn the pitfalls in teaching and communication that may turn off new students comic from another paradigm.
  • Explore why and how your yoga style is unique and different from other styles so that you can smoothly answer questions that arise in students from other styles without offending or criticizing.
  • Learn to recognize the physical patterns of runners, Ashtanga Yogis, Iyengar Yogis, dancers and so on. This skill can give you the capacity to get right to the nub of things with a student.
  • Expand your student base by attracting and maintaining a flow of new students who stay. Plus, when you communicate clearly, you train students to communicate with their loved ones more clearly about Restorative forms of yoga and your word of mouth student base grows.
